Discovery Earth Mine and Driving

Yesterday was a good day. Our ride was broken up by a stop in Sudbury. Of course, the entire ride continues to be one gorgeous view after another. More green hills, forests, grasslands and lakes. You just can't take enough pictures of this stuff.

After a really good lunch in Sudbury at a gastropub, we headed over to the science museum Discovery Earth. They are located on top on a small mine that has been turned into part of the museum and has tours running through it. The whole museum is pretty much dedicated to rock formations, how they were formed and the properties of various minerals. They have almost every rock and/or mineral available either for display or to be handled. It was a very interesting little museum.

The mine tour lasted approximately 1 1/4 hours and our guide was very entertaining. She was really great with the kids on the tour. The part of the mine we were in is on the upper levels and is now only used for the museum tours. The miners were digging for nickel and copper. We had to wear hard hats and were shown how mining was accomplished in the very beginning and how it evolved to modern mining.

After the museum we hit the road again for a couple of hours and decided to spend the night in North Bay. North Bay is on Lake Nipissing. It is a good thing we started calling for hotels on the way there. This is a long holiday weekend in Canada which we had forgotten about. Out of 63 hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and campsites which came up when we googled the city, only 3 motels were not booked solid. We got lucky. Our motel is right on the lake and the only reason we even were able to get a room is that they had just had a cancellation.

The view once again is gorgeous as is the weather. We're now going to have to hit the road once again, this time for Ottawa. We'll be staying with Graham and Megan, Peter's brother and sister in law.
