Cross Country Canada

Even when it's a driving day, things can get interesting!

So, remember how I said I probably would not add to the blog today? Surprise! I'm adding to the blog today.

As you know, today was just supposed to be a driving day. On the road to Winnipeg, we saw a sign saying Swinging Bridge. Of course we had to go explore this. The Swinging Bridge is in Souris which was only about 24 km off the highway so we took the detour.

It is supposed to be the longest swinging suspension bridge in Canada. It was over a river and the view was gorgeous. We went across and back again. While there we ate lunch at a picnic table near the bridge. We met a nice couple on the bridge who gave us some more tips on things to see when we get to Winnipeg.

There was a sign next to the bridge about all the things to do in Souris. Now, we are on limited time and can't do everything we wanted to, but one thing in particular stood out. The Railway Museum. When Bob was in his 20s, he worked on the railroad for 2 summers. So off we went to the museum.

It turned out to be a boxcar filled with old train memorabilia on one end and a locomotive engine training simulator on the other. Tending to it were 2 older gentlemen, Ferg and Gerry. We must have spent 1 1/2 hours with them. They were full of wonderful stories about the railway in Canada. Bob had stories of his own and it was fun to watch the 3 of them chatting away.

Eventually though we had to get on our way. So it was back to driving and on to Winnipeg. We are staying at a beautiful hotel in the center of town, the Fairmont. Dinner was at Bailey's. It was a fabulous meal. Now it's off to bed and onto tomorrow's adventure.
